#blacklivesmatter is a human rights issue
#blacklivesmatter is not just a Black issue or an American issue. It's a human rights issue. It should concern everybody.
When you can be killed on sight just for being black in America, something is definitely wrong in this country. And when the perpetrator of such a crime receives no more than a slap on the wrist, we must ask ourselves what kind of world we have become accustomed to living in.
Feelings of complacency towards injustice here and abroad exist when we subconsciously believe that these horrible things cannot happen to us. That somehow we are not at risk. As Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” These crimes can and will happen to us, too.
Being an ally to the #BLM movement is not about helping an oppressed people with a subtle air of condescension. It is for the security of all people. And most importantly, it’s to remind ourselves that all people deserve to be treated with basic humanity.
When are we going to realize we are all in this together? How many black lives turned hashtag is it going to take? I'm asking you to stand up and speak up for what is right, and do it in whatever capacity that you can.
peace and love,
